It seems like every day when we look at the latest news stories, all we see are the deaths of famous people we have all loved and adored. Today is sadly no exception with the death of American comedian and actor Bob Saget, who died on January 9, 2022, in Orlando, Florida. He was 65 years old. 

Saget was found dead in his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, where he was staying while on his “I Don’t Do Negative Comedy Tour.” The Orange County Sheriff’s Office was called about an unresponsive person, and when they came to the scene, they found it to be Bob Saget. The cause of death is still unknown, but the Sheriff’s Office said that there were no signs of foul play or drug use. 

Bob Saget was born on May 17, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Abington Senior High School in 1975. He wanted to become a doctor, but after his English teacher saw his creative side, she urged him to look into a career in acting. Because of this, Saget attended Temple University’s film school where he produced a film titled, Through Adam’s Eyes, which awarded him a merit in the Student Academy Awards. This was just the start of his journey into the film industry. 

In early 1987, he was a member of CBS’ The Morning Program, but that didn’t last long, and he set his sights on something else, a new tv show, which would garner millions of views and gain him nation-wide recognition: Full House. 

Full House was a television show for ABC which lasted for eight seasons, from 1987 to 1995. It followed the Tanner family, as a widowed father, played by Saget, his best friend, and brother-in-law all raised the father’s three daughters. After hearing about his death, many of his coworkers and friends on the show spoke out. John Stamos stated that he was “gutted” and “broken.” Dave Coulier said that he was devastated, and that Saget was his “forever brother.” Candace Cameron Bure said that he was, “one of the best human beings,” and Andrea Barber stated, “he had the biggest heart of anyone in Hollywood.” 

In 1989, Saget also started hosting the now famous television series titled, America’s Funniest Home Videos, which he hosted until 1997. 

Saget directed many more films, namely the 1996 ABC television movie For Hope, which was based on Gay Saget, his sister, who died from scleroderma, a disease involving the hardening of skin and tissue. He also directed his first feature film Dirty Work, in 1998. The same year, he made a cameo in the comedy Half Baked. Other movies and tv series include Raising Dad, How I Met Your Mother, 1 vs. 100, That Ain’t Right, Entourage, Farce of the Penguins, The Drowsy Chaperone, and many more. From 2016 to 2020, Saget also famously reprised his role from Full House in its Netflix sequel series, Fuller House. 

Saget is also known for his charity work, where he was a board member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation, which benefitted many people, like celebrity Regina Hall. In an interview with Ability Magazine, he talked about his sister who was diagnosed with scleroderma, and how these efforts were to honor her. 

Bob Saget will be missed by many, as he always wanted to make people laugh, even to his dying days when he was on a comedy tour. He directed and starred in so many important films and television series, and we can’t thank him enough for everything that he has done for us.
