Buddies and Futures

Passing the torch! FBLA sponsor Mrs. Karen Lang, junior Rowan Maggy, senior Hannah Rizzo, and junior Ainsley Wilgis travel to Kirkland Ranch K-8 to educate middle schoolers on joining FBLA. “I love being included in a community of motivated students who share similar goals of learning and having successful futures and careers,” said Maggy. Cypress Creek high school has many afterschool activities to offer, one being clubs. Clubs are a great way to show colleges commitment and leadership skills.

Out of all the clubs, different ones are dedicated to different causes. While some are focused on careers, others focus on helping others. Best Buddies meet every Tuesday to show kindness and advocate for those who can’t. “This club is unique to others because it’s a bunch of people gathered to close the gap of exclusion and promote inclusion. You gain lifetime friendships and opportunities”, said senior Lindsay Fulop.

Fulop, a member of Best Buddies, has been a part of the club for four years. Throughout her time in the club, she has learned a lot that many may not consider. “I have gained so much experience about learning how to be more inclusive and how to advocate for individuals who have IDD [Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities]. I can’t wait to continue to learn and grow my skills more with Best Buddies.” said Fulop.

When it comes to careers, the two main clubs at the creek stand out to colleges. Junior Kaela Chen, a co-president of HOSA [Future Health Professionals], is a notable example of leaders in career-based clubs. “I like inspiring the next generation of future healthcare professionals… There’ so many people want to go into the medical field, so this one is tailored specifically to that. But it also includes people that want to do dentistry, medical, doctors of general kind and then also veterinary practices,” said Chen.

In addition to HOSA, FBLA [Future Business Leaders of America] is another career-focused club at Cypress Creek. “We compete at the district, state, and national level, which I think is something that is very different from other clubs. It looks good for college,” said junior Rowan Maggy. Both of these clubs combined have often shown colleges consistency and dedication to their future careers.

In general, these leaders are committed to making changes through new projects in their respective clubs. “There is one event that I want to organize for our club and that is a Best Buddies talent show. I want to show Cypress and our community the talents and capabilities everyone in Best Buddies has”, said Fulop.

In comparison to Best Buddies, HOSA is also hosting many important events for those who want to go into healthcare. “For HOSA, I really want to focus on competitions, but for those who don’t want to compete, I want to do volunteer projects. But for competition, I just want to help lead them through the process and what they need to know and how to prepare them properly,” said Chen. These are just some of the many clubs that have great opportunities for students to participate in.

“ I like the opportunities that we have and the fact that it gives something to be a part of outside of the classroom. We get hands on experience,” said Maggy.
