The crowd bustles in green and gold, anticipating the new teacher and SRP (School-related personnel) of the year. Last year, the teacher of the year was former journalism teacher Mr. Trent Wisser, and the SRP was Career Specialist Mrs. Cassie Adley. This year Dr. Kristina Padula won the teacher of the year, and Mrs. Terri Almeida won SRP of the year.
Ms. Almeida carried her head high as principal Carin Hetzler-Nettles called her name to join her in front of the eyes of the onlooking students. She comments on how the award reflects the time and effort she put into her job at Cypress Creek high school. “You know, it was an honor to be selected by my peers… they see the hard work and dedication I have towards the school,” said Almeida.
Dr. Padula had a similar response to receiving her award as the previous teacher, believing that the reward properly demonstrates the commitment she shows as assessment coordinator. “It felt really good to win that recognition and have my peers also recognize that, you know, I do work hard and I make sure my students are successful,” said Padula.
Both Ms. Almeida and Dr. Padula prioritize students having support, reflecting on their favorite parts of being a teacher at CCHS. “You start off as young little ninth graders coming into the school, coming off being the big wigs in middle school. Just watching you guys grow and make decisions for your future.” said Almeida.
Dr. Padula, like Ms. Almeida, savors the feeling of achievement that comes from her students, and walks alongside them through their high school journey. “So just being there and seeing them finally accomplish those testing requirements and getting accepted into college. That is the most rewarding thing about my job,” said Padula.
Both teachers do excellent work around Cypress Creek High School, supporting our students, and working as an essential part of the staff. Our school would not be the same without our SRP and Teacher of the year recipients.
