At Cypress Creek High School, a designated English teacher- Nicole Saly, rose to the top and decided for the 2024-’25 school year that she would take the role of sponsoring the National English Honor Society. The club was previously ran by English teachers Ms. Brocatto and Mr. Herndon, who unfortunately had taken their leave from the campus this year, leaving the fate of the club uncertain to who would charge it forward towards success and great accomplishments.
However, the club was not lost, and still thrives today under the watch of Ms. Saly- and it’s officers. Within the National English Honor Society is a leadership system, led by Seniors President Camryn Paradise and Vice President Kaysen Chen, with various officers beneath them- both who have clear objectives for the club this year, best stated by Chen.
“I know our goal- our first goal this year is to go to some elementary schools that are like our feeder schools to help support English in their kindergartener-first grade levels.”
This is not the only thing in their eyes, though, as they have plenty more to come as the year goes on and more opportunities open. They also need more members for the club this year around, as Paradise states.
“The deadline (for the club) was originally Tuesday, it was the third of September, but we’re still leaving it open,” she said. “Oh, please join, it is very welcoming I promise, we make it very open, we make it very intuitive to what the chapter actually wants. We want to do everything that everyone wants to do- we want to do the fundraising, we want to do the fun stuff, and I would say join.”
National English Honor Society can be a club for fun or a passion for English, but it can also be more than that. It can carry out of high school into college, with possible scholarships or a good look on attendee’s records when applying to universities, as it is a very significant extracurricular.
“What we really do is offer up the scholarships that are presented by the National Honors Society, but there’s no real like- competing or anything like that. But, you are able to submit essays and everything and get some scholarships (for college).” Said Paradise.
And with a new year beginning, the future is looking bright for the club- under new management, and with plenty of new opportunities for members of the close-knitted literary group.
