On Aug. 16, a new season began. A new chapter opened for freshman football players Trevor Thomas, Taylen Feagin and Antonio Williams.
These athletes started their freshman year off in Key West with the varsity football team as they traveled south for a preseason match-up with the Fighting Conchs from Key West High School. Fresh out of middle school and new to the varsity football program, there was so much to learn. They had to learn how to communicate, attempt to bond with their new teammates and learn the schemes of the varsity football team.
Trevor Thomas, a freshman lineman, ended the season with nine tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks. Thomas has been playing football for seven years – he’s grown up in an environment where football has been in his life.
“I felt like the underdog, but throughout the journey of the season, I bonded and made a connection with my teammates which helped me gain trust and honor for my upperclassmen,” said Thomas.
Antonio Williams, also a lineman, completed the season with seven tackles and two tackles for loss. Williams played football for one year. Williams has always played basketball – he never tried football until this year. He’s gained as much love for football as basketball throughout his first football season.
“I felt like I had to prove myself that I was capable of being there as a freshman, the bond with my upperclassmen was very good and getting even better and I have a lot of respect for them,” said Williams.
Taylen Feagin, a starting defensive back for the Coyote varsity football team. His season ended with 75 all-purpose yards, 27 tackles and one interception. Feagin has been playing football for nine years. Feagin also has a brother named Nizhan Feagin who is a senior.
Nizhan Feagin got hurt early during the Key West game. The Feagin brothers have a very strong bond, it was unfortunate for them that Nizhan Feagin got hurt because that would’ve been the first and last season they got to play together.
“Playing football has been a part of my life since I was five, I started from a young age and grew to become a stronger and a better athlete. I have played different sports in my life, but none of them compared to the love I have for the sport football,” Taylen Feagin said.
