AP Art is an elective class offered at Cypress Creek High School where students can relax, unwind, and express themselves creatively. It provides an opportunity for self-expression through art, offering students the space to explore their unique styles and perspectives. Zach Kreider is the school’s 2-D and AP art instructor, the latter being a non-AP conservatory class.
“This class is mostly independent, having your own creativity, and trying to inspire your own style,” said Kreider.
AP Art meets in Room 1-201 during fourth period. While it is a primarily independent course, Mr. Kreider is always available to offer guidance and feedback to students who need it.
“It’s really good when students ask questions; it gives me a chance to help guide them,” said Kreider, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and support in the creative process.
For those considering taking the class, Kreider has his own thoughts on the matter.
“I would recommend taking 2D Art one and two before taking AP because those classes will help you gain more experience,” Kreider added on.
In AP Art, students are encouraged to find inspiration from a variety of sources- whether it’s memories, experiences, or personal interests. For example, Mandujano Perez found inspiration from his television.
“I was watching 2024 Mr. Olympia and it’s something that inspired me,” said Perez.
The class is not just about creating art however; it’s about exploring personal identity through artistic expression. Junior Natalia Quiles, for example, is creating a piece that represents physical features on herself, a Hispanic.
“I’m creating a self-portrait to show cultural differences between me and the people around me.” Said Quiles.
Unlike other art classes that may focus on technique or republishing other artists work, AP Art encourages students to develop original pieces that reflect their own perspectives. For junior Elliot Belcher, this means capturing the beauty of nature through her eyes.
“I’m working on drawing nature because I think it’s really beautiful,” Belcher said.
AP Art offers students the chance to push the boundaries of their creativity, explore their identity, and develop their artistic voice. It’s a commitment, but for those willing to take the journey, it’s a transformative experience that goes beyond just art- it’s about personal growth and expression.
“To me, art is a balancing act because it helps level out the stress of school and the feeling of doing something self-fulfilling.” Said, junior Autumn Krapfl
