The end of Oct. creeps upon Cypress Creek Highschool like a prowling coyote, howling with its cool weather and running rampant with Halloween spirit as the holiday crawls closer and closer. Oct. 31st, the day that kids cheer for! But- it begs the question. Are Cypress Creek students still young enough to pursue the childish and spooky spirit, or have they outgrown the silly candy and “cheap scares?”
Leading up to the anticipated (or not, for some) day, Cypress’ own principal Mrs. Carin Hetzler-Nettles announced that dress up would be allowed on-campus for October 31st within reason. Many students quickly took advantage of this permission to devise clever costumes- both within the class assigned dress theme and not- proving that the Halloween spirit was still rampant within the Coyote community.
“I didn’t really have time to go to Spirit Halloween for my costume,” said freshmen Wavebreak Culanag, adorned in a green alien like costume, “so I just found a bunch of pipe cleaners and took a headband from my mom and attached them to it.”
Following his theme, the freshman were assigned to dress up as aliens for the school day, with sophomores being scarecrows, juniors being skeletons, and seniors being witches and warlocks. Students dressed within the theme were tallied by first period teachers and were submitted to win grade-level spirit.
Kylee Axcius, another freshman, said “I just love showing my school some spirit.”
Some students decided to pull off their original planned Halloween costumes, however- going slightly off-theme, but the school permitting them anyways. That is, if they followed the dress code, which forbids things such as full-face masks. Many cosplayers could get around this, though, especially if they were humanoid characters or subtly dressed.
“It’s from Rocky Horror Picture Show,” said freshman Ma’llyn Trevino when asked what she was dressed up as. “I’m a random character that just showed up to a party.”
Many students took it upon themselves to bring hats on this day as well, as they were permitted for costumes, one of the only- and major- dress code breaks for the day. After all, pointed hats are a signature trait of witches, which was the seniors’ dress up theme. Witch hats, beanies, top hats, steampunker caps, and more could be seen across the campus- but nothing unreasonable was permitted.
“Eric Cartman from South Park,” said sophomore Andrei Lavallee when asked the same question as Trevino, adorned in the signature beanie.
While many may go trick-or-treating and many may not, the day was still a special one at the Creek during school hours and many students enjoyed the day thoroughly, appreciating the effort admin put into making Halloween special at school.
Chloe Catalanotto concluded with her thoughts, saying “I just love spirit week, especially the dress-up days.”
