The past year has been a wild season for the cypress creek swim team, with challenges, and unforgettable moments for the girls and boys swim team. From breaking personal records and school records to overcoming bad races and not having a swimming pool after the hurricane, these athletes have proven their strength and commitment to excellence in the swimming pool.
For the past four years, senior Kiley Naramore has been a dominant swimmer in the swim program. Each year, Naramore has qualified for the state championships in the 100 backstrokes and for her final year on team her and her relay made it to states for the 200-medley relay. Her dedication and tireless training have paid off as she does multiple practices swimming for the cypress creek swim team and her outside of school club team. The record-breaking swimmer has shown perseverance and passion to her other teammates at they all watch her dominate in the water. Coaches and teammates alike admire Naramore ability to persevere through tuff races and to never give up.
Naramore said “I am very proud of myself and all the of the team for what everyone had done this past year, after all the training this year i was excited to see where it got all of us and lead me to going to states again.”
This year, the swim team reached new heights. Seven girls qualified for their spot at the state championship. These girls have been working so hard to show up and compete at their best. Whether it was through individual swims or relay teams, the girls proved what it meant to be a part of the cypress creek swim team. It was the success of the entire team, who had worked side by side each other, pushing each other to do better and to get faster every day.
Sophomore Gianna Sercu said “I feel that we all pushed through all the challenges that we faced this season and that’s what pushed us and helped us to qualify for states.”
The girls relay team was having a great season. The girls relay team qualified all the way up to states the team qualified in the 24th spot which makes them the first cypress relay team to make it to states. The relay team consisted of Kiley Naramore, Lily Maczuga, Gulianna medina, and Gianna Sercu. This relay team broke the school record seven consecutive times in a row, their final and fastest race came down to 2:00.06 seconds. The Cypress creek girl swim team finished off states in 16th place dropping a whole 8 spots in their final relay and with a cut time of 2.75 seconds from there last race from the first relay event to their final one, the girls showed great teamwork and determination to do better every time they were in the water.
Sophomore Guilanna Medina said “Are relay team shocked a lot of people including myself and I’m proud to see the results in all the practicing we have done this season. I am also enormously proud of how we finished the season strong and for placing 16th at states.”
Lily Maczuga a freshman joining her older sister, junior Mckenna Maczuga on the swim team and shows just how good she is. LilyMaczuga, dominating by breaking the school record in the 50-yard freestyle all in just her first year on the team. Maczuga’s performance was nothing but showing that nothing can stop her as she shows just how fast she can go in the water. With coaches stunned by her amazing swim skills and other swimmers cheering her on she keeps performing her best.
Just when the team thought nothing could get worse from multiple canceled meets due to rain, disaster struck. Two hurricanes back-to-back with a whole two weeks not in the pool they get back and hear that their pool was damaged, with that damaged pool the swim team was not able to swim. The team adapted by training on land doing dryland practice with running and weight training. After a while, the cypress creek swim team could swim at a community pool. Diving back into the water was good for the creek swimmers and encouraging one another through the little setback and to get ready for the soon bug race the district meet. Despite the odds the team persevered through the storm showing nothing could stand in their way.
The 2024 swim season was filled with unforgettable achievements and challenges that tested the limits of what these team could achieve. From Naramore’s fourth consecutive appearance at States to the cypress relay team’s breaking the school record, this group of swimmers shown a lot to other and proved just how good this team is. L. Maczuga, showing the team that she is great and breaking a record as a freshman. While the entire team’s ability to overcome the hurricane’s disruption proved just how strong their bond and determination truly were.
