Feb. 17, Cypress Creek Indoor Percussion continued their competition season. After an impressive premiere, the band arrived at their next target, Plant City High school, presenting their returning piece “Immortal.” This time, the band incorporated costumes and props, much different from the small snippet of premiere. Indoor went full out for this competition, and the performance did not disappoint. This brought a whole new element of visuals with choreography and costumes, featuring Gavin Exum as the main role, the Pharoah.
“It’s nerve-wracking cause one judge is judging only me,” senior Gavin Exum commented when preparing for the piece.
When competing, judges look at music technique, visuals, and the overall performance which totals to the score. That said, a single judge is assigned to watch Exum alone and judge his performance, which could make for a stressful time.
The performance not only showed excellent music, but full choreography that truly told the story, with fight scenes and the downfall of the Pharoah. Every performer brought energy and power to the piece, depicting mummies, and enemies of the Pharoah as he attempted to reach “Immortality.”
“The dance feature was all me, the rest Strok and I came up with,” Exum remarked when asked who was behind the choreographed movements.
Despite the poor weather that came that day, the Coyotes continued and performed admirably, scoring a 60.95, earning a strong second place. The hard work and practice paid off. With one more competition before finals, the Cypress Creek Indoor group are on a strong advance to Finals.
